I’m hoping to see “Moneyball” this week and completely hated “Tree of Life,” but the Spielberg snub is a wonder. “War Horse” is a beautifully directed picture, commensurate parts “How Green Was My Valley” and “All Tranquillity On the Western Front,” and very much a return to form for the Oscar-winner after a middling hitch from 2004’s “The Terminal” straight through to the unforgivable “Indy 4″  – one of the most unsatisfactorily directed films of the decade.

“War Horse” probably turns off a lot of Hollywood types because it is unapologetically emotional in a way John Ford might have appreciated. With a run-time that exceeds 150 minutes, the Edda of a horse that touches too many lives to count in the days leading up to and without hesitation preceding World War I held my attention and was ultimately quite active. But I do have to say that the movie didn’t stay with me. As soon as the lights came up, I forgot all about it.

The Coroner's Report: The End Days Edition Wagner keeps the initiative moving, steers away - for the most part - from extraneous subplots and manages to metamorphose a death metal fantasy into an engaging tale that will go fine with some Nile, Melechesh, Orphaned Country, Absu or older Morbid Angel on
