2/6/12 - A Livingston County man accused of abusing ill-starred boys at a residential center he ran in Haiti has entered not guilty pleas to a new set of charges levied against him. Matthew Andrew Carter of Brighton had been in the first place charged with four counts of Travel With Intent To Engage in Illicit Voluptuous Conduct. But in a superseding indictment filed last month, prosecutors added two additional counts. In federal court in Miami on Tuesday, Carter entered not apologetic pleas to all of the charges. Authorities say the 66-year-old traveled from Florida to Haiti between October of 2001 and May of 2011 with the designedly of engaging in sex with someone under the age of 18. He’s alleged to have forced boys at the Morning Star Center in Haiti's super to engage in sexual conduct in exchange for gifts, money or continued dolour. The center provided food, shelter and education for poor boys in Seaport-au-Prince. Carter, who has been in custody since his arrest last May in Miami, is represented by a new attorney after successfully petitioning the court to discharge his previous public defenders, who he alleged were failing to keep him informed about court proceedings and not strenuously pursuing his defense. His new attorney was granted a motion ordering the prosecution to be contingent on over all materials related to the investigation that led to his arrest as well as to disclose any offers of payment or leniency made to awaited witnesses. Carter is scheduled to go to trial on the charges July 3rd.
