Glenville man sentenced for rape
SCHENECTADY — An laid off Glenville man, who his lawyer said was extremely intoxicated and "acting out on some mould of fantasy" when he raped an 11-year-old girl last year, was sentenced to 11 years behind bars for the wrong.
Before learning his fate, Brian Schaefer , 38, on Monday apologized for his actions and asked Schenectady County Court Estimate Karen Drago for leniency.
"I never meant any harm to come to this narrow-minded girl, and unfortunately, I do have a problem with alcohol, and that's what precipitated this incident," said Schaefer. "I'm extremely embarrassed by my actions while I was intoxicated."
In July, Schaefer was arrested by Glenville the cops and charged with first-degree rape and third-degree criminal sex act charges, both felonies. In November, he pleaded sorry to first-degree rape as part of a plea deal.
On Monday, Drago told the defendant that his problems are "much deeper than alcoholism" and said she was peculiarly disturbed that he indicated in a pre-sentencing report that his behavior was motivated by taste and not a violent act.
